Call For Applications: Training Of Journalists On Reporting On Cross Border Trade

Media Focus on Africa  Uganda invites applications from journalists based in Northern Uganda and West Nile region  for a specialized training on reporting on cross-border trade

Background

Cross-border trade plays a critical role in fostering economic growth, social cohesion and regional integration between Uganda and its neighbours. However, reporting on these issues requires a nuanced understanding of trade dynamics, conflict sensitivity, gender dimensions and policy frameworks This training is part of the Trade-Up! Project which aims to promote peaceful coexistence and collaborative problem-solving among cross-border communities, particularly in areas such as Elegu.

Objective of the Training

The training aims to equip journalists with the skills to:

  • Report accurately and responsibly on cross-border trade issues
  • Apply conflict-sensitive and ethical reporting approaches
  • Produce human-centered and data-informed stories
  • Amplify voices of traders, especially women and marginalized groups

Training Format

In-person training: Thursday 14th and Friday 15th May 2026

Follow-up online sessions to support story development and mentorship

Who Should Apply

We are looking for:

  • Practicing journalists in Northern Uganda (radio, TV, print, digital)
  • Journalists with interest in economic reporting, governance, or community stories
  • Early to mid-career journalists based in Uganda, especially those covering northern Uganda or border regions

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated interest in reporting on development or public interest issues
  • Relevant experience in journalism  business and trade reporting is an added advantage
  • Motivation to produce stories on cross-border trade
  • Journalist must be based in Northern Uganda and West Nile
