In 2001 Media Focus on Africa (MFA) MFA was established in The Netherlands. In 2006 the Kenyan organization was put in place as a not for profit company under the leadership of one of its founders, Mr. Frank Klein as Chief Executive Director. In 2009 the board decided to overhaul this structure, not only with the objective of improving its internal governance and accountability matching the required international standards for not for-profit organizations, but also to tailor its ambitions to regionalize its activities in East Africa and/or beyond. In September 2009 MFA established Media Focus International, an international foundation, directed by a Board of Directors. Media Focus International has three country offices, one in Kenya, one in Uganda and one in The Netherlands. MFA Netherlands however does not run any projects but assists MFA Kenya and MFA Uganda in fundraising and managing ongoing projects in the two countries.
In December 2010 Mr. Frank Klein sadly passed on after a battle with cancer. MFA has since been under the leadership of various people including Mburugu Gikunda, Charles Otieno Hongo, Linda De Kooning, Laurence Caron and currently Paul Van Leeuwen being in charge of The Netherlands, Harrison Manga in charge of Kenya and Jan Ajwang in Charge of Uganda.
